I had a successful stem cell transplant in 2009. At that time, I was advised by my oncologists to not take the existing shingles vaccination because it used live virus and my immune system was highly compromised. Times change: because the Shingrix vaccine does not use live virus, it is safe for use by people like me. My oncologist at Mayo Clinic recently informed me that Shingrix is now a component of the standard post-transplant regimen! If you have been advised to avoid the shingles vaccination, please talk with your medical team about Shingrix. BTW, I had a relatively mild case of shingles about 30 years ago. You really do not want to share that experience!

I had the chicken pox vaccine and had the chicken pox once as a child and once as an adult. My children had two chicken pox vaccines and got the chicken pox as children (this was the cause of my adult chicken pox) so we seem to be really prone to it. Even though the vaccine hasn’t been very effective for me, I will still get the shingle vaccine and hope I never get shingles.

I had chicken pox for the first time as a 31-year old adult before the vaccine was available and it was HORRIBLE!! (My darling 18-month old son gave it to me.) GET THE VACCINE! My then then almost 4-year old son never caught the virus so we had him vaccinated as soon as the vaccine was available. He never got chicken pox and is almost 31 now.

I had chicken pox as a kid and have had my shingles vaccine. Be careful as shingles vaccine can make you sick. 1st one was ok and 2nd one I had a fever for a day. Just get it on Friday so you don’t have to miss work and can recover. Shingles are much worse then vaccine, I highly recommend getting it.
