I really only ever thought about breast cancer as you hear about the importance of self exams and screening every where. Then my doctor found swelling in my neck during a routine visit and I had thyroid cancer. I’d had it about 1 1/2 Years. The radiation treatment has raised my risk for all other cancers. I am a lot more aware now than ever before. I appreciate quizzes like this as I knew eating too much red meat was bad but not that it actually could impact cancer risk. I also didn’t know about the high calcium supplements.

A long-time sufferer of acid reflux (resulting in difficulty swallowing food) led to my first upper scope & colonoscopy well before I was even close to 50. I had good results. Whew. But I had to return in 3 years due to having polyps that they removed. I’ve gone when I’m supposed to & I’m doing well with that so far. In the meantime, a cousin didn’t have a colonoscopy until his colon cancer was well advanced. Due to his positive attitude & large support group (with his family & co-workers), they allowed a lot of treatment that they said they normally wouldn’t do with his physical condition. He lived much, much longer than was ever expected, but he has passed. Do the colonoscopies that you are supposed to & when you are supposed to. It is done for your health benefit. Just do it. The prep is torture, but it’s just one evening every 3 to 5 years. Do it.

Having a screening will bring to light the essential necessities to eat healthy. Having regular check ups and exercising and not sweating over minor anxieties and frustrations in life will greatly increase in a positive way your mental and physical well being, share your blessings with others.

My mom was just diagnosed today with CRC in the cecum. All of the symptoms listed in the quiz were true for her. No my risk just increased. Thank God I’m vegetarian!! But now I have to convince her to give up the grilled red meat and stop taking calcium with vitamin D supplements which her doctor advised her to do. Smh and trying to cope with it all. Also, the ethnic disparities are real!!!
