It's not about the calories, it's about the quality of the food, sugar content, fats etc. What you burn off also depends on muscle mass, ie the body burns more fat if it has more muscle. Eating unprocessed whole foods and looking at the type of exercise that is best for you will be more successful and healthy for you long term than counting calories.

Mike it has been proven that a calorie is in fact a calorie. As long as your body gets the fats carbs protein and Cals it needs based on the things I've mentioned above you can achieve the physique you want.

Donna, yes I am trying to lose weight. How do I figure out how many calories I should have every day?

How much weight do you want to lose? How many calories you need is just your basal metabolic rate (BMR) And here's a simple BMR calculator: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

Total energy expenditure (TEE) is what you need to maintain whatever weight you're at. TEE=BMR x something b/w 1.2 to 1.6 depending on your activity level. To lose one pound per week, you need to eat 500 cals/day less than your TEE (not your BMR).

Don't just go off food labels. The calories you need depends on your age, gender, height, weight, activity level, and goal. Are you trying to lose weight?

Caitlin, thanks for that. I just looked it up and the "if it fits your macros" (iifym) calculator seems good for learning your personal daily calorie needs.
