Yoga & Blood Pressure

According to research presented at the 2013 annual meeting of the American Society Hypertension, practicing yoga 2-3 times per week for 6 months results in a 3-6 point drop in blood pressure. A systolic blood pressure reading (the 'top' number) dropping by 2 mm Hg cuts the risk of dying from heart disease by 7% and the risk of stroke death by 10%.

After the 24 weeks, those who practiced yoga only recorded the greatest drop in blood pressure among all three groups. The average blood pressure readings dropped 3-6 points. In comparison, the average decrease in blood pressure was smaller (1-2 points) for people who ate a special diet but did not do yoga. Although the improvements in blood pressure were small, the authors believe they could be important as even a small reduction in blood pressure has health benefits. Research shows that even a systolic blood pressure reading (the 'top' number) dropping by 2 mm Hg cuts the risk of dying from heart disease by 7 percent and the risk of stroke death by 10 percent.

Yoga & Inflammation

According to research done at Ohio State University, women who practice yoga regularly for at least two years have 41% less inflammation in their bodies than women who only recently have taken up the activity.

Yoga & Body Composition

A recent study done by the US Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Science concluded that Bikram yoga decreased body fat by almost 5% and cholesterol by almost 15% in a group of participants.

Participants were recruited through campus flyers and advertising by the Bikram studio. Subjects varied in practice from beginners (those who had never practiced Bikram yoga) and intermediate to experienced (those who had practiced yoga for at least a month or more). All recruited subjects were prescreened through a questionnaire via email assessing any potential cardiovascular health risk, with exclusion criteria including diabetes, myocardial infarction, coronary thrombosis, coronary occlusion, heart block, arteriosclerosis, rheumatic heart disease, heart valve disease, heart failure aneurysm, heart disease, heart murmur, angina, or thyroid disease. The purpose of the study was to assess whether 8 weeks of Bikram yoga had significant effects on body composition (percent body fat, fat mass, and total body weight). Bikram yoga decreased body fat by almost 5% and cholesterol by almost 15%.

Yoga & Brain Health

According to research presented at the 2013 annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, practicing yoga regularly leads to more gray matter — brain cells — in certain brain areas.

Researchers found that yogis have larger brain volume in these areas:

  • - Somatosensory cortex: which contains a mental map of the body
  • - Superior parietal cortex: involved in directing attention
  • - Visual cortex: researchers think this may be boosted because of visualization techniques
  • - The hippocampus: a region critical to dampening stress
  • - The precuneus & posterior cingulate cortex: areas key to the concept of self
